Like ramen, kimchi, spicy noodles, milktea and the most popular, “Samgyeopsal” or Korean Barbeque. We can see many post on social media about it and there are many new restaurant opens around manila and provinces. Many Filipinos are going crazy about it because of its unique concept and it comes with various side dishes.

SAMGYEOPSAL ( 삼겹살 ) IN KOREA

Samgyeopsal or also known as samgyeop-sal-gui or grilled pork belly is a type of gui (grilled dish) in korean cuisine. Its name literally means “three layered flesh” which denotes the layer visible on the meat. Samgyeopsal is a popular Korean dish that is commonly served as an evening meal. The meat, usually neither marinated nor seasoned, is cooked on a grill at the diners’ table. Usually diners grill the meat themselves and eat directly from a grill. It is typically served with ssamjang , vegetables, and lettuce leaves to wrap it in. Samgyeopsal or also known as samgyeop-sal-gui or grilled pork belly is a type of gui (grilled dish) in korean cuisine.

It is said that samgyeopsal originated from Kaesong on the early 20th century. The people in Kaesong was known for their excellent skills and innovative ideas when it comes to business. Koreans have long preferred beef over pork, a predilection that dates back as far as the Joseon Dynasty. So, entrepreneurs come up with the idea of samgyeopsal thinking that it would be successful because koreans love eating meats.

March 3 is the designated “Samgyeopsal Day” in South Korea, where in they celebrate it every year. When celebrating it, the average of daily sales of samgyeopsal becomes higher as many koreans seems to observe this special day. It is celebrated every March 3 because 3 in Korea pronounced as “ssam.”

As the Samgyeopsal became popular in the Philippines, many restaurants opened and offers this korean dish. According to many people, there are proper ways on how to eat samgyeopsal.

Once the meat is cooked, use a piece of lettuce to wrap the meat strip. One may also place a piece of sliced onion, garlic, kimchi or any of the available vegetables inside the meat wrap. One may also put cooked rice in the wrap.

Dip the meat wrap to one or both of the main dipping sauces of samgyeopsal. Ssamjang is a paste that consists of chili paste, soybean paste and sesame oil, while the gireumjang is made of salt, sesame oil and a small amount of black pepper. Usually, the ssamjang is used by diners who eat samgyeopsal in a vegetable wrap while the gireumjang is for diners who want to taste the cooked meat itself.

This step-by-step is just a guide on how it is actually eaten but don’t hesitate to experiment and eat it the way you like or want. One of the cause why it became popular because people are free to eat it depends on their liking.

Aside from samgyeopsal or pork belly itself, there’s also many different side dishes in line with it in restaurants. Some of these are: Oi Muchim (Spicy Cucumber Salad) Hobak Bokkeum (Stir-fried Zucchini) Gaji Namul (Steamed Eggplants) Sukju Namul (Seasoned Bean Sprouts) Oi Bokkeum (Stir-fried Cucumbers) Watercress Namul. Mu Saengchae (Spicy Radish Salad) Gamja Jorim (Braised Potatoes).

POPULARITY IN THE PHILIPPINES

Korean restaurants have been popping out left and right in the Metro – partly because of the growing Korean population in Manila. And despite the strong spicy flavor and distinct smell, there is also a growing interest among Filipinos when it comes to Korean food. Last year, 2018, samgyeopsal became very popular in the Philippines and many restaurants had been established that offers this korean barbeque. With prices that usually range between PHP 400 to PHP 2,000 and good interior designs, many Filipinos are enjoying it.

EFFECTS OF SAMGYEOPSAL TO FILIPINOS

The benefits of samgyeopsal on our health is it has a lot of protein that is needed by our body for muscle growth and maintenance.It also offers an excellent range of vitamins and minerals and maintains muscle mass.

Even there’s a good effects, it also has a disadvantages on our health if the meat is not thoroughly cooked because raw pork contains parasites that are deemed as hazardous to a healthy human being, such as pork tape worm and parasitic roundworms so make sure that you cooked it thoroughly.

Filipinos prefer to consume ready-to-eat meals because of their fast-paced and time-strapped lifestyles, so they tend to eat to the fast foods that satisfy their cravings and hunger with a cheap price. And since Samgyeopsal became very popular, and it serves with many different side dishes at a low cost, Filipinos are loving it.
